French horn player, Samuel Nutt won a scholarship to the Royal Northern College of Music and graduated with a first class honours degree in 2025. At RNCM Samuel studied under the tutelage of Lindsey Stoker and visiting tutors who included Katy Woolley, Alberto Mendez, Frøydis Ree Wekre, Timothy Jackson and many top horn players from across the UK and Europe. He has played as principal horn with the RNCM Symphony Orchestra in Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 8 and Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester.
Samuel is a member of the Phoenix Brass Quintet who are on the rise in the North of England after making it to the semi-finals of the Philip Jones International Brass Competition in 2023. Its members are all performing with the top orchestras in the North. Samuel himself is a regular with the Hallé Orchestra and Opera North, and plays with most of the freelance orchestras in the North West of England and occasionally gives solo recitals.
Samuel grew up in Norwich playing with the various youth ensembles and other Norfolk orchestras. He took part in the Britten Sinfonia Academy, benefiting from side-by-side tutoring with principal horn Alex Wide, and also took part in the National Youth Orchestra Inspire programme. Together these groups gave him opportunities to perform at some of the country’s leading venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Symphony Hall Birmingham, Snape Maltings and the Barbican, and with conductors like Gustavo Dudamel and Sir Mark Elder. He is thrilled to have the opportunity to come back to Norfolk as a soloist with The Mozart Orchestra.
