Geoffrey Barker

Geoffrey Barker

Geoffrey studied the violin and piano at Royal Academy of Music and began conducting in his post-graduate year.  Having established a reputation as a violinist and orchestral leader with orchestras in South Herts and North London, he returned to conducting when appointed to the St Albans Symphony Orchestra, which he rejuvenated by introducing new repertoire, including works by Bruckner, Moussorgsky and Stravinsky, as well as by his work with young soloists, including violinists Aaron Stoloff and Fiona Vanderspar, as well as those firmly established, such as pianist John Lill.

His association with East Anglia started in 1992 when he began conducting the Churchgate Sinfonia in Bury St Edmunds, a post he held until 2002, by which time he had moved to Suffolk and had begun playing regularly with a number of established orchestras.  These included The Academy of St Thomas, the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra (which he both leads and conducts), the Beccles Chamber Orchestra and the Eye Bach Choir orchestra, which he leads.

More recently he has conducted the Norwich Philharmonic Wind Ensemble in a performance of Mozart's 'Grand Partita’ and the full orchestra in a performance of Shostakovich's Fifth symphony.

Other musical activities outside orchestras include regular performances with the Degani Piano Trio and an increasing number of solo and recital engagements.
